How to measure for faux wood and real wood blinds

Wood and faux wood blinds are forgiving to measure, but the depth of your window reveal decides whether they will fit inside mount. Check the mounting depth first.

Rather not measure? The in-home measure is free, and then the fit is our problem, not yours.

Step by step

  1. 1

Check the mounting depth: you need enough room inside the reveal for the headrail, usually about 2 inches.

  2. 2

If the depth works, go inside mount. Measure the opening width at the top, middle, and bottom and use the narrowest.

  3. 3

Measure the height at the left, centre, and right and use the longest.

  4. 4

If the reveal is too shallow or out of square, go outside mount and add at least 2 inches on each side.

  5. 5

For outside mount, measure the total width you want covered and the full drop.

  6. 6

Enter measurements in inches and eighths, exactly as taken.

Common mistakes

  • Faux wood suits kitchens and bathrooms because it handles moisture.
  • Real wood prefers dry rooms such as living rooms and studies.
  • Order a valance if you want to hide the headrail on an outside mount.
  • Measure twice, order once. It is a one minute habit that saves a remake.
