How to measure for cellular and roman shades
Cellular and roman shades need one extra decision: how much stack you can live with when the shade is raised. Measure carefully and check the stack height against your window before you order.
Step by step
- 1
Choose inside mount for a clean, built-in look, or outside mount when the reveal is shallow or you want more privacy.
- 2
For inside mount, measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening and record the narrowest.
- 3
Measure the height at the left, centre, and right, and record the longest.
- 4
Check the stack height spec for your shade against the window height. You need enough space at the top for the folded shade when it is fully raised.
- 5
For outside mount, add at least 2 inches of overlap on each side and measure that total width.
- 6
Enter your final numbers in inches and eighths, exactly as measured.
Common mistakes
- Cellular shades stack tighter than roman shades, so they suit shallower windows.
- Roman shades look best outside mount on a rod or inside mount with a deep reveal.
- Never measure from a previous blind's brackets, they may not be level.
- If in doubt, book a free in-home measure and take the guesswork out of it.
