Why Canada went cordless, and what it means for your kids' bedrooms

June 30, 2026

If you have shopped for blinds recently and noticed almost nothing comes with a cord anymore, that is not a supply chain problem. It is a safety rule, and it is a good one.

Cords on window coverings are a strangulation hazard. A loop of cord dangling near a crib, a bed, or a low window is exactly the height a small child can reach. Regulators have spent years studying the incidents, and the consensus produced a clear direction: remove the cord, or make it inaccessible.

Canada followed that direction. The national standard for corded window coverings now requires that products either be cordless, have short cords that cannot form a loop, or have the cords secured in a way a child cannot reach. Because the rules are strict, most of the industry simply went cordless, and that is now the default for everything we sell.

Cordless means the lift is built into the headrail. You push the bottom rail up or pull it down, and it stays where you put it. There is no dangling loop, nothing to tangle, and nothing to reach. It also looks cleaner, which is a happy side effect.

Motorized is the other half of the story. A motorized shade has no cord at all, and it is controlled by a remote, a wall switch, or an app. For a nursery, that is the safest option and the most convenient one. You can lower the blackout shade from the doorway while the baby is already asleep, without stepping into the room or making a sound.

If you have young children or pets, the practical checklist is simple. Replace any old corded blinds, especially in bedrooms and any low window. Choose cordless as the baseline. Consider motorized for the nursery and any window a child can reach. And check the older coverings in a house you just bought, because a corded blind from a decade ago may still be hanging there.

It is one of the few home upgrades that is both safer and better looking. If you are not sure what is on your windows now, book a free in-home measure and we will take a look and give you honest advice, whether or not you buy anything.
