Motorized blinds 101: motors, remotes, hubs and voice control

June 12, 2026

Motorized blinds sound complicated until you break them into four parts. Once you see the pieces, the whole thing makes sense.

The first part is the motor itself. Our motorized shades use a rechargeable battery built into the headrail, charged through USB-C. Depending on how often you move the shade, a charge lasts months, not days. You are not running wires through your walls, and you are not hiring an electrician. If the window gets good sun, an optional solar panel keeps the battery topped up so you may never think about charging at all.

The second part is the remote. Every motorized unit comes with one, and one remote can run many shades. You can group them, so a single button lowers the whole bedroom wall, or control them individually. This is the part most clients use every day, and it is the reason motorization earns its keep on tall windows and hard-to-reach transoms.

The third part is the hub, which is optional. A hub connects your shades to your home network, and that unlocks three things. Scheduling, so shades can follow the sun and open in the morning and close at dusk on their own. App control, so you can run them from your phone anywhere. And voice control, so they answer to Alexa and Google Home. If you only want to press a button, you can skip the hub. If you want scenes and schedules, the hub is the piece that makes it happen.

The fourth part is setup, and this is where a lot of online purchases fall down. Buying a motor online and pairing it yourself is fine if you enjoy that sort of thing. Most people do not. Motorized shades arrive with pairing steps, limit setting, and app setup, and if any of it is off, the shade does not behave.

That is why we program everything at installation. When we install motorized shades, we pair every motor, set the limits, connect the hub, set up your app, and test voice control before we leave. You get a system that works, not a box of parts and a manual.

If you have tall windows, hard-to-reach windows, or a nursery, motorization is the upgrade we recommend most, and it is the one clients tell us a year later they are happiest they made.
